Optimists are Better at Handling Stress

Have you ever pondered how it is your optimistic friend always seems to be untroubled with stress? Scientists have already determined the reason behind that.

Researchers from Concordia University found that optimistic individuals’ stress hormone levels remain more stable in the face of stressful moments compared with their pessimistic counterparts.


According to study researcher Joelle Jobin, who is a Ph.D. candidate in clinical psychology at the university, on days where the people subjected to the experiment experience higher than average stress, that’s when we see that the pessimistic individuals’ stress response is much elevated, and they have trouble bringing their cortisol levels back down.

The small study, results of which are published in the journal of the American Psychological Association’s Health Psychology, included 135 people ages 60 and older who were followed for six years. This age group was selected because older adults often face a number of age-related stressors and their cortisol levels have been shown to increase. During 12 different days throughout this time period, researchers collected saliva samples five times a day to measure their levels of the stress hormone cortisol. They also asked the participants how many times they felt stressed/overwhelmed in a day, what level of stress they thought they experienced typically, and whether they considered themselves optimists or pessimists.

Then, researchers compared the cortisol levels of the participants on individual days to the average cortisol levels they experienced throughout the years, in order to gage how much levels fluctuated up or down. They found that the optimistic individuals’ cortisol levels were less likely to rise significantly on stressful days compared to their average stress levels, while pessimistic individuals’ cortisol levels were more likely to be elevated compared to their average stress levels.

The study generally confirmed the researchers’ hypotheses about the relation between optimism and stress. Anxiolytic Effect of Aromatherapy Massage in Breast Cancer Patient

Essential oils have many kinds of pharmacologic actions including anti-microbial, sedative, analgesic, spasmolytic and estrogen or steroid hormone-like effects making aromatherapy one of the complementary as well as alternative medicines used to treat various diseases and symptoms. Essential oils such as true lavender, rose, mandarin, sweet orange, sandalwood, geranium and many more have anxiolytic effects and aromatherapy massage has been also proven to reduced anxiety, depression and the risk of high blood pressure.

In a recent study, aromatherapy massage was proven to significantly reduce anxiety level in breast cancer patients. This study was conducted after obtaining approval from the Ethics Committee of Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine where 12 breast cancer patients aged 45–58 years, stage 1–4, from 6 months to over 3 years post-operation were subjected to an open semi-comparative trial to measure how aromatherapy massage influenced psychologic and immunologic aspect of these patients. All of these patients had received chemotherapy and/or hormonal treatment, although more than 1 month had passed since the completion of chemotherapy. The results were compared 1 month before aromatherapy massage as a waiting control period with those during aromatherapy massage treatment and 1 month after the completion of aromatherapy sessions. The patients received a 30 min aromatherapy massage twice a week for 4 weeks a total of eight times. Each subject received the same standardized massage performed on the anterior area of the neck and thorax, back, shoulders, arms, hands and upper legs for 30 min by skilled therapists. Jojoba oil, sweet orange oil (Citrus aurantium), Lavender oil (Lavandula angustifolia) and Sandalwood oil (Santalum album) were used as carrier and essential oils.

The results showed that anxiety was reduced in one 30 min aromatherapy massage in State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) test and also reduced in eight sequential aromatherapy massage sessions in the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) test. The results further suggested that aromatherapy massage improved the immunologic state.
