Water Water Everywhere – It’s Songkran!

The Thailand water festival, or Songkran, is a New Year celebration in the country.  Customarily, Songkran is celebrated with the belief that, with water, it cleanses, purifies and signifies a fresh start to everything.  As with Asian traditions all over the world, before the beginning of a new lunar calendar, people celebrating the Lunar New Year festival are often advised to wash away their past or ‘bad’ chi by spring cleaning their houses.

Religiously, to start the day of Songkran, there will be bathing ritual for the Buddha images with scented water.  The ‘blessed water’ that was used to bathe the images is now used to pour onto someone’s palms, especially the elders’.  This is a way of paying respect and it is believed to bring good fortune.

Over the years, however, the pouring of water has become the throwing or splashing of water in the streets.  People from all over the world gather in Thailand for the carnival-gala good-natured fun.  Thais even walk with pails and water guns, some will stand beside the roads with a hose and shoot water at people passing by.  In fact, because Songkran is celebrated in April, the water splashing does not hurt at all as it is the hottest part of the year in Thailand, getting wet is refreshing after all.

The word Songkran, in Sanskrit, means the passage of the sun moving from one Zodiac sign to the next.  There are supposedly twelve Songkrans each year, but the most significant has to be the sun entering the first sign of the Zodiac, which is the sign of Aries, the Ram.  The date was originally set by astrological calculations, but it is now fixed on 13 April, and Songkran is celebrated officially as Thai New Year’s Day from 13 to 15 April every year.

Songkran celebrations are organized throughout Thailand while some cities take it a notch higher with activities and events that run for a week or more.  If you want to be in the centre of all the happenings, do book your accommodation and arrive a few days earlier at places like Chiang Mai, Phuket and Bangkok.  These cities will be clogged up to full capacity in April.

In a candid interview with Oprah, who was the host of the eponymous multi-award winning talk-show The Oprah Winfrey Show, he said that he has learned to let go of everything.  “I’m not Hugh Jackman. I’m not a dad. I’m not a husband. I’m just dipping into that powerful source that creates everything. I take a little bath in it…Nothing has ever opened my eyes like this. It makes me calm and happy, and, well, it gives me some peace and quiet in what’s a pretty chaotic life!”

Effects of Aromatherapy on Dementia Symptoms

Dementia is a term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life. Memory loss is the common type of dementia and people with dementia may have problems with short-term memory, keeping track of a purse or wallet, paying bills, planning and preparing meals, remembering appointments or traveling out of the neighborhood. Most of dementia cases are progressive, which means symptoms start out slowly and gradually worsen over time. The treatment of dementia depends on its cause.

Dementia impacts a patient’s life greatly, as well as that of his family. It can take a toll in a patient’s behavior and how he relates with his family. And though the cure for such illness is not yet discovered, in recent studies it was found out that aromatherapy has some benefits for people with dementia who display behavioral symptoms.

One study was conducted in Hong Kong where a significant reduction in agitated behavior using lavender oil was identified in a cross-over randomized trial. Seventy older Chinese people with moderate to severe dementia were recruited for a study of the effects of six-weeks of lavender or sunflower inhalations, with a two-week washout. At the end of the study, total mean scores showed a positive reduction in agitated behavior.

In another study, lavender oil also had a positive effect on the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). A placebo controlled trial with 15 participants with severe dementia using 2% lavender oil aromatherapy steam every second day for a total of 10 sessions resulted in 60% of participants showing improvement, 33% showed no change and 7% showed a worsening of agitated behavior when compared to the control group. This study was limited by the small sample size.

Anxiolytic Effect of Aromatherapy Massage in Breast Cancer Patient

Essential oils have many kinds of pharmacologic actions including anti-microbial, sedative, analgesic, spasmolytic and estrogen or steroid hormone-like effects making aromatherapy one of the complementary as well as alternative medicines used to treat various diseases and symptoms. Essential oils such as true lavender, rose, mandarin, sweet orange, sandalwood, geranium and many more have anxiolytic effects and aromatherapy massage has been also proven to reduced anxiety, depression and the risk of high blood pressure.

In a recent study, aromatherapy massage was proven to significantly reduce anxiety level in breast cancer patients. This study was conducted after obtaining approval from the Ethics Committee of Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine where 12 breast cancer patients aged 45–58 years, stage 1–4, from 6 months to over 3 years post-operation were subjected to an open semi-comparative trial to measure how aromatherapy massage influenced psychologic and immunologic aspect of these patients. All of these patients had received chemotherapy and/or hormonal treatment, although more than 1 month had passed since the completion of chemotherapy. The results were compared 1 month before aromatherapy massage as a waiting control period with those during aromatherapy massage treatment and 1 month after the completion of aromatherapy sessions. The patients received a 30 min aromatherapy massage twice a week for 4 weeks a total of eight times. Each subject received the same standardized massage performed on the anterior area of the neck and thorax, back, shoulders, arms, hands and upper legs for 30 min by skilled therapists. Jojoba oil, sweet orange oil (Citrus aurantium), Lavender oil (Lavandula angustifolia) and Sandalwood oil (Santalum album) were used as carrier and essential oils.

The results showed that anxiety was reduced in one 30 min aromatherapy massage in State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) test and also reduced in eight sequential aromatherapy massage sessions in the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) test. The results further suggested that aromatherapy massage improved the immunologic state.
